Perhaps not well-know today, A.Z. Enos was one of the leading figures in the early development of Springfield, Illinois. He was also a leader in the land surveying community during his time. Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1821, the Enos family subsequently moved to Madison County, Illinois, where Enos’ father, Pascal P. Enos, was instrumental in laying out the town of Springfield in the 1820’s. Young Enos studied civil engineering, joined a law firm in Springfield, eventually becoming a member of the Bar Association which included the likes of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. Not happy with the law, A.Z. Enos pursued land surveying, serving several terms as county surveyor, alderman and member of the school board. Perhaps Enos’ most important cross-road with history was his involvement in acquiring the famous Lincoln Opinion Letter on the rules for the subdivision of sections. This program will study the early surveys in Illinois and the events leading up to Abraham Lincoln penning his famous surveying opinion. Power Point presentation.

PDH = 2; Speaker: Jim Hankins This class will present a surveyor’s view of the Standards of Practice that influence and control the practice of land boundary surveying. The seminar will cover the three general areas of the standards of practice which are written standards, normal standard of care, and ethics. These standards include written standards such as the Illinois Administrative Code contained in Section 1270, the 2016 ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey Standards, and municipal subdivision regulations. The normal standard of care will cover some example court cases, duty to the public welfare, boundary doctrines, and expert testimony in tort and negligence. We will also examine the Code of Ethics by presentation of example cases.

Ignorantia juris non excusat ignorance of the law is an excuse for no one. Nowhere is this maxim truer than in the professional services arena, and in particular, land surveying services. This seminar will explore the law, the sources of the law, and the difference between the law and equity. The court system will be studied and legal writings will be introduced. Sources for finding the law will be discussed. The legal research project will be studied from beginning to end. A live internet search will be conducted that will include finding the law on several key areas that affect surveyors in their everyday practice, including, but not limited to: liability; statutes of limitations; boundary disputes; property law; deeds and instruments of conveyance; and contracts. Participants will come away with a better understanding of the law and how it affects the professional land surveyor.

Getting pretty pictures by drone is easy, but getting consistent and high-accuracy survey data takes know-how. Aerotas has learned the hard way what it takes to get survey-grade accuracy by drone, from training hundreds of surveyors drone surveying and processed thousands of drone surveys. This seminar reveals the best practices Aerotas has learned for collecting survey-grade data by drone. Attendees will walk away with concrete lessons on how to determine the right drone for their business, how to choose the right projects to use a drone on -- including regulatory and business considerations -- and how to set up and complete a drone survey project, including mission planning, aerial targets, and flight parameters. The talk will include real-life case studies to make the lessons concrete, including the most common mistakes surveyors make when using drones. This seminar will be most valuable for field surveyors, crew chiefs, survey business decision makers, and those responsible for making equipment & procedures decisions for their organizations.
